i know haha thats where i got my 55G. i dont have all of that yet so most of it will be towards the end closer to when i upgrade to my 110. just dont have space for a bigger tank right now
That is a lot of bio load... lots of bio load requires lots of rock for the bacteria to grow to break down the ammonia. The more rock that is in there displaces the usable gallons... Even for FOWLR, it's way over stocked even for only a year. Going to need a good skimmer to make this work.
everything is fine. the fish are all small and they are doing great. im going to have a medium amount of rock in there and i have a canister filter that has rock in it also so i dont waste space in the tank.
Adding rock can cause a cycle and you have fish in there. And having a canister without the rock is bad enough ,but worse with rock in it(nitrate factory).
A skimmer is great because it removes organics before they break down. I would probably keep the canister on a FO just because it will help break down ammonia to nitrate. Yes, it can contribute to nitrates... but that is a minor issue in FO systems. WIth a very heavy bioload you may need the help. Although adding rock adds filtration it also decreases water volume so there is a point of diminishing marginal return on adding rock.
Even with babies you already have a tank stocked too heavy IMO, I would not add more. Keep in mind that besides bioload, you can have territorial aggression especially as these fish mature. The GSM you mention will consider ALL of a 30 or even a 55 as hers at maturity. She may not be able to beat up a Lionfish to prove her point, but being constantly in aggressive mode is not healthy.
I said my piece on it and will not beleaguer the point.
Why do people always do this? Build the tank before you get the fish. You say he is alright but how about you try to spend 24hrs a day in a 4'x4' room for a year and see how well you are doin.
y do ppl always comment before they know whats going on. would you rather him be in the petco 5 gal? cause thats where he would be if i didnt buy him.. or hed be dead.. lol not cool
at least im giving him a chance. we dont have anybody around here with a tank to accomidate him. if i didnt buy him there was an idiot guy with a 20g that was gonna buy him who has it wayyyy overstocked already... so thanks for the support
ive found myself "RESCUING" fish from the PETCO ICH DEATH TANKS......i agree with you and EVERYONE else on the 3 fish.
granted you MEAN well is it WELL ENUFF.....i know it seems like your tank is better than the petco display tanks BUT you got a trigger and an eel in there as well which means gallon for gallon he isnt in much of a bigger area.
BUT.....while your in the process of getting the other tank up MAKE SURE you stay on top of water changes in the 30 to keep those 3 guys as happy and healthy as possible.
never owned a puffer before(other thang green spot freshwater puffers) but i know that the trigger and the eel are MESSY eaters and can pollute the water pretty fast.
do u have a skimmer on there now? if nopt get one the coralife hang-on skimmers for the time being.....they work pretty good for small tanks and you can get them at petco and most fish stores pretty cheap.
like i said just stay on your husbandry and they will make it thru while waiting on their new home....
zack hows the tank going. I have recently deiced to do a pred tank. well turn my FO in to a pred tank, i currently have a huma huma trigger, a blue dot puffer, a potters angel and will be getting a dwarf lion soon. im not sure if i want a eel. i know they get out of tanks, and my tank is the headboard for my bed, so i dont wana wake up with an eel on my face.
actually (knock on wood) my eels dont do that at all. and the green wolf is actually more a cousin to a goby than an actual eel so i feel safer with him and i would really recommend one. TONS of personality. he lete me pick him up and he comes to my hand when its in the tank. and i actually have NO algea problems with this tank (knock on wood again) and i dont have a skimmer and my params stay GREAT!
well i usually cant get shots of him but this was close to the end of feeding so he was already stuffed and decided to carry this guy around for like 20 min before he finished him
