Refugium lights

Is it better to have 1X18 watt daylight bulb or have
1x9whatt actinic and 1X9 watt daylight for a refugium?

I don't see why you would need an actinic in the fuge. I just have HD yard lite that runs @65w, flourex bulb and the macro just grows like crazy.

I wanted to add something to this post. Im running an 18watt daylight and Im just not seeing the growth that I want out of my macro algae. So heres the problem, I want to up the wattage while introducing the least amount of heat as possible. Does the HD 65 watt produce alot of heat? Should I do PC instead?

thanks chrisf9801!

i have it on a @40g sump.

the K rating on the HD light is 6.5K. algae tends to like the lower K ratings. a bigger factor in growth is how much phosphates you have in your system. if you do not have any phosphates, which is difficult to do, than the algae will not have any fuel. if you can slow the flow in your fuge so that it acts more like a settling tank, this will aid in collecting phosphates by collecting detritus in their. there is a fine line here with algae, cyano, and hair algae.

Goeff, is there any other reasons for having low flow in a fuge.

The reason I ask is because I have about 50% more flow through my fuge than "recommended," but my halemeda (?sp) is growing like crazy, my caulerpa died, and my dragons breath doesn't seem to be doing anything at all. Could certain types of macro algae grow better or worse depending on flow? Or did I possibly create a situation where the different algaes were competing for the same nutrients?

By the way, the fuge is 5 gal w/ two 13 watt 50/50 PC (10000K daylight/03 actinic; I plan to keep some zoas in there eventually).

absolutely, they are all competing for the same resources. Halimeda is the algae to have. it does not go sexual on you, so you do not need to worry about mass die off. it is also easily trimmed for nutrient export.

there are two ways of thinking about flow in the refuge. there is flow in the refuge and flow through the refuge. they can be completely different. i only have about 2-300gph going through my refuge, but i also have a PH in it so the total flow in the refuge is closter to 700gph. what this does is give the nutriets a better chance of being absorbed by the algae before being returned to the aquarium.

What type of heat does this 65 watt HD light give off. Is it a prong pc bulb or what?
