Hi guys Im setting up a refuge to help with Nitrate removal my question is Im looking at a 20 gal tank with pc lighting how strong should the lights be?How many watts to support the caulerpa and sand and rocks? I see alot of 24 in fixtures on ebay some have one bulb some have 2. Do I need the 2?

i can only tell you my experience, and this is only with the evil razor caleurpa.

it grows great in the display. ,but it is having a hard time growing in the refuge. the only thing that i can think of is the fact that the lighting is so much stronger in the display, that they are able to outcompete the stuff in the refuge. my quess is you should keep about the same intensity of light in both the display and the refuge to keep the algae growing as well or better than in the display. now this may be completely different if you have a species of caleurpa or any other macro that is heavily predated in the display.

Casey, my fuge is 12" deep and I have one 50/50 pc bulb on it. I harvest about a 4 cup measure every 2 weeks. A 20-gallon tank is only 3" deeper, I think. Don't know that I'd bother with any more bulbs, the caulerpa just grows to towards the surface anyway. JMO.

We had a NO bulb on our 20 'fuge. Grew plenty of caulerpa.

About a year ago we switched to one of those "lights of america" PC lamps from HD. I don't remember the wattage, but I can check later. (I'm not at home) We run it 24/7, and the growth is very heavy. (Mostly sargassum, cup, feather, grape and a smidge of razor. But the majority is sargassum.) It also hasn't gone sexual in as long as I can remember.

Good luck,
Danielle

Casey, I'm guessing that one pc bulb is prolly enough. But if you're likely to start dropping corals in there to isolate/protect or propagate, then you may want to admit that this hobby of yours is running amok and install 2 bulbs from the start...

Unlike me, of course

i have a custom 35-gallon 3 stage refuge and i only have a 36w 50/50 pc over it. I have about 20 mangroves in it plus about 5 different types of macro. It works really well. The mangroves have already grown 3 sets of leaves.
