Lighting fans on top or side

I will need to cut holes in my canopy to install 4" fans for MH lamps. Has anyone place the fans on top versus the side of canopy. I would think that due to heat rising, better exhaust of it would occur venting through the top. Also when I walk by I wouldn't get my hair all mussed up.

Ive heard that having the fan blowing across the lights keep the bulbs cool and that helps them last longer. Keeping them on the top would sure help in removing the heat from the canopy and probably aid in keeping your tanks temp from rising too much. You could have the best of both worlds and have one blow across the light and another on top to exaust the heat.

Fans

Evening Hommeworks,

I have tried several ways of placement of the fans. My last canopy was open on top and the back. However, it just depends on what you like.

I build stands and canopies for peope and everyone has a different idea. I think it is just like reefing. What ever works best for you! If your top is low enough to see it, you can accomplish the same effect you are talking about by placing the fans in the back near the top. It is still taking the air from the top and from the bulbs.

The one I am working on now will have 4 fans on the back of the canopy. 2 on each end, one on top of the other, and the ones on the left sucking in and the opposite end blowing out.

Good luck!

Chris

Sorry to jump on this post with a question but how long do your fans last Mine lasted me 6 months. These are the 4 inch Radio Shack Models.

Hi Jeff,

I have used the 4 and 5 inch ones. I try to get them online, and the metal ones. ALthough I must say, I have had pretty darn good luck with Woody's way of using the clip on fans. They run forever. ANd also Woody's motto, they're cheap!
