Life of MH bulbs
I'm looking at the long term costs of lighting and can't find anything on the life span of MH bulbs.
Can someone tell me how long various bulbs last? Is there a difference between brands or K-ratings? Is there a difference between socket and double-ended types?
TIA
Daryl

Hi Daryl.
Here's some information you may find useful. Scroll down the page and you'll see a section on used lamps. FWIW I run 250 watt Iwasakis for 1.5 years.

Hmm, i think they recommend changing out bulbs yearly.
was thinking lately that mine were due to be changed,,looked at the date of a pic of the tank b4 and after i upgraded to Mh's
geez,,,,close to 2 yrs old!
happy to say i did replace the 2 400W 10K's on the 75 recently,,and the ongoing cyano i had in places instantly never has returned, and the coralinne on the back wall and on the LR is looking better/brighter and i'm getting new colors of it i never had b4
the wife confirmed my observations, and agreed,"we got a lotta $$ in this tank , makes sense to spend the $$ to keep it going nicely"
so i/we plan on changing bulbs at probably every year now,,
just can't force myself to throw the "old" ones away
squeek, squeek,,,(that's me being ahhhh,,,, frugal,,,ya thats it!LOL)
just my 2 cents,,,,

They make good spares in case of a premature outage.

Spares are always nice, the overstock could be used for algae bed lighting, even if you have to give em away
I brought this up to see if anyone knew of recent tests showing bulb degradation over a year or more span?

Got my setup used - so uncertain on the age of my bulbs [no more than 2 - 2.5 years] ... just changed bulbs yesterday.
Wow! The 175w MH 10K is so much `whiter', not sure if truly brighter, but an obvious color shift had happened towards the yellow/red end. Much more pleasing light now.
And the PC [2x55] actinics ... were `blue' and gave a nice color. Now - holy crap! So much more flourescent coloration, worth every penny. A much more pleasing light. Was going to use the old actinics on my prop. setup ... now I think I'm going to have to get new bulbs for those.
Given it's the health of my corals - I'm with Junkzoo on replacing them regularly, even if they `could' last longer I"d rather have happier corals.
