Is this too Big?
I am looking at getting an Oceanic Brick-Stle tank that is 150g.
72 ½ x 18 ½ x 28 ¾
For the canopy I would like to have an MH ready canopy that is about 10" tall.
But the stand....there is where I have the problem. I like a tall stand but am wondering if 32" or 36" or 40" would be best??
I know 40" will be VERY TALL, but I think it will be awesome.
What problems will I face with having a tall stand with an MH canopy?

how long are your arms?
step stool are great.
you can make it as tall as you want. i would tie it to the back wall studs just for extra protection. do this after you see how much the floor sags when all the water and sand is in it.

The reason for the brick style is that people have said that after a while MH lights can melt the seals on the middle support, and that people have had their tanks blow that support.
Is this true?

It is all glass. Oceanic makes only glass tanks.

that is why i was confused. the melting issue i remember was only with acrylic tanks. glass and silicone both have melting points ridiculously higher than the MH will produce.

hmmmm. maybe I was speaking to an Idiot and just didnt know it They should be required to wear signs. Great then. I will save several hundred dollars by getting a regular tank. I wanted a 135 and keep the same basic dimensions if melting is not an issue.

ok, i am getting more confused. what do you mean be a regular tank? do you mean getting a tank with a plastic brace? i have one on my tank. i will be watching it closely in several years, as i have heard and can believe that the UV light produced by some MH bulbs can slowly degrade the plastic and make it brittle.
the standard oceanics use glass braces across the top so this is not an issue.

No, I meant a regular tank in that a 135 with a support piece in the middle. I wonder if I can get the support in glass to avoid the brittle factor.

This isn't anything a quick DIY brace project couldn't take care of...

yeah...you are right there. I just want to avoid any issue of things getting too hot on this new tank and warping or breaking because of heat. Am saving to get a chiller and in a few years I am sure I will be asking what kind of those to get. Trying to make it a great tank with little problems/regrets and a nice cool tank.

even with the plastic braces, temperature is not an issue. unless the bulb itself is resting on the plastic. i put a thermometer 2" from my 400w mh and it got up to 140F. this is without a fan. i then put a fan blowing on the bulb and the temp droped to 100F. this is not hot enough to melt the plastic.
