Fans cooling your tank

Fans blowing in from the back of the tank is best way to used them. 55cfm is a good air flow for a 4 in sq box fan. But one thing that will help the fans the most is to put a 4 in dryer hose on the back of the fan and let it hang down about 12 to 14 in behind the tank this will help stop the fan from pulling hot air at the top. You can check your own fan by putting a thermometer at the back of your fan and check the air tem going in. I hope this will help so that many of you will not have to buy a chiller and can get better used of your fans. Have a good day. RGibson

The thing you have to remember with fans is that you have to be able to exit at least as much air as you are pushing in.. The higher the temp in canopy near bulbs the more airflow you are going to need. The same with room temps that approach optimal reef temps(for instance 80-82F)If the room is 80 and you have MH lights you will need alot of airflow to drop the canopy temp, as opposed to being able to keep the room temp doun around 76 or so. Anytime you can arrange to pull hot air from canopy and vent it outside, thats a good thing
Auxillary fans in the sump cabinet can help lower temps by evaporation, a side benny is more water to replace with Kalk or whatever. Keep in mind tho the higher the ambient humidity the less effective evap will cool. Hint it works much better in the SouthWest than the SouthEast
