Let's see, the 250w HQI burns the same intensity as the 400w's read sanjay's report, cost more to replace, suppose to last a little longer than a SE, need UV glass for protection, ballast cost a little more - I'm sure I'm missing something...

Don't know about cost more to replace, they run about the same in the 10000K temps. (not to say cheap!) Europeans seem to prefer them, not quite as available here, particularly in fixtures (I had to build mine)
They are bright!!!!
Require HQI ballast (magnetic), or Icecap electronic (but Sanjay's report says they are more intense with the magnetic ballast. I can't see a difference, but my eyes are not an accurate Luxmeter)

Hi smellsfishy. Welcome to TRT.
I've been running DE for several months and like them. Do you have any question in particular?

So you've changed out the saki's? I still have them on the main tank and I have one over the rose tank pushed by a dual PFO HQI ballast. It's bright I got this ballast just to try out the overdrive on the sakis and will be using it on the "inwall" soon. To bad I'll need 3 of these PFO's.

My tank is about 30" in depth to the sand bed, so I am looking at 2x250 watt HQI. I want a 48" hood that also houses actinic and possibly moon lighting. I don't have a canopy so I need a full hood. The hood also needs legs as the room the tank is in has a 20ft ceiling. Coralife has a unit coming out by the end of May but I would like to start purchasing corals.

Sanjays report can be found in the archives of Aquarium frontiers in reefs.org. He also had a new report in Advanced Aquarist not too long ago.
DE MH lighting is now widely available and the cost is much less.
Companies like CoralVue are making quality lower cost bulbs in all temperatures for DE.

The fixtures or pendents for DEs are somewhat pricy. It all depends on what corals you want. If you are keeping strictly sps, then 250watt DE's will be perfect and will result in unreal colors if all other params are up to par(get it, up to par? ) If you just want softies and clams, with some brightly colored sps in top 1/2,(like me! ) then 250watt SE bulbs will be find on regular PFO magnetic ballasts.

Would the 250watt DE's be too much light for a mixed coral tank? Oh by the way thanks for the link to Sanjay's report.

I'm not sure smellyfish, if you only put softies and lps on the bottom i'd think you'd be okay. How deep is the tank?

My tank is about 30" from the surface to the sand bed. Casey, is your tank as deep as mine? I am not worried about heat because I have a chiller. I just like some of the soft corals as well as the sps. I know they may have different lighting requirements and don't want to over do it.
