We have both the big ice cap 4" fan and 2 radio shack 3" fans. The ice cap really pushes the air but it is loud when it is going full power. I got the radio shack fans online and they are DC powered and I think a little more quiet then the AC fans. We have 1 fan on each end of our hood blowing in. Many people differ on blowing in or blowing out, they are probably the same. HTH

Heya Casey
I've just been doing some quick fan shopping!
I just got a new mh fixture for my refugium from AquaticCo. Its absolutely beautiful and I am very pleased with it!
....Except that the Mechatronics cooling fan it came with is UBER LOUD. I've ordered a 3" Ice Cap variable speed fan to replace it.
I have two 4" Ice Cap fans in my canopy. They are the greatest! They have little sensors that tell the fan how hard to run, so they are not always humming away full speed if its not needed. I also think they are pretty quite. Well, they are the quietest one I've ever messed with. =P
When I notice the noise coming from my Ice Caps, I know its time to clean em'.
I got the 3" from here but Premium Aquatics sells them too, they were just out when I checked.

This company has very reasonably priced fans. I just bought 2 4" fans, and paid about $30.00 with shipping. They have many locations throughout the U.S., so you may be able to pick it up directly and save on the shipping. The fans are very quiet compared to Radio Shack (and much cheaper). The part number I ordered was: OA109AP-11-3WB @ $13.50 each

Casey I just put in two radio shack 4inch fans in my hood and that cooled my tank down from 86-78. They only come on when the halides turn on but thats what works for me. I have put those Ice Cap fans in other tanks and they get real loud and dont last as long. Another idea is use a fan to blow down on your sump too.

I use 4" ind fans out of oxygen generating machines, they arent quiet but move serious air. I recycle them from work and have spread them around among reefers

Our 4" fan is going out on our MH hood as well...started making LOTS of noise so we were going to get one of the Ice Cap Variable Speed Heat-sensing ones from PA this weekend...$39.95...
If Icecaps are loud fans; I'm not interested I looked at the ones on the three sites listed above (Jimbo's post and Avonlea's Post) and can't see how you'd "plug them in"...I'm assuming the Ice Caps come with a plug? If they are quieter and work well with saltwater, then I should probably stick with the Icecaps.
??
Thanks,
Shirley (Doug, Steve can wire them... )

The Icecaps are only loud in high speed. But they will only go into high when you really need the cooling. Icecaps are 12VDC and come with a transformer. Plug-N-Play. I just can't figure out why they only come with two mounting screws when you need four.

hmmm...OK, so are they worth the money -- is it the fact they are saltwater-compatible that they are expensive?
Thanks,

I have two that are going on three years old. They haven't gotten noiser over time and nothing is rusting on them. I would say they are worth the money.

The Fans I bought (and most others) need to be wired, but it's VERY simple. Just take some lamp cord and either solder or tape to connect the wires together. You don't have to worry about + or - or anything weird. Then just add a simple plug to the end of the lamp cord. It took me about 10 minutes to do mine.
