If you were to remove the "lights" from on top of the tank, you could easily retrofit some nice lights with a reflector into your canopy. The reflector in my tank (same one in the pics) is 10"Deep x 48"Wide and it easily held 8 65W PC bulbs.

A PC hood will definately reduce the amount of lights you can fit over your tank. The amount of space, the housing for the lights uses, will allow you to add at least one more bulb/bulbs (VHO/PC)

The other option might be a MH/PC or VHO combo hood, just not sure how well it will fit inside of the canopy.

if you are only going with pc to be bale to fit them over the 55. you can stil ldo VHO... i jsut built a canopy this week for a 55 all glass as well. i used vho and have room for 3, with over an inch between them. i'm sure i could put 4 in if they were right next to each other. i also went with 46.5 inch bulbs instead of the tight fit of a 48" bulb. i have the same tank as you, and i really think yo ucan do it alot cheaper than with pc.

my setup was only 150 for 2 lights, ballast, wiring, and endcaps.

Well, I'll give it a shot. I'll measure the canopy and get going on the retro kit. I'm guessing I'll go with 3 or 4 bulbs depending on reflector size etc...

Thanks everyone for your help!!! TRT just ROCKS!!!!

One other thing. I have a glass top that I'd like to get rid of. Will an eggcrate style top throw funky shadows?

I still shop around, but for the most part, they still tend to beat everyone else I've ever done comparisons with. I ddin't use them for my MH as I found a place that had the IC 250W HQI ballasts for $120 each, shipping on 2 was like $6. But I did buy my mogul sockets, mounting base and bulb from them, they were the best price on those.

BTW I think you'll like the PC's, nice choice.
