What do you guys think about a UV sterilizer for FOWLR tank? Also, who makes the best one?

I don't know a whole lot about UV's and have never compared prices/quality. What I do know about them would make me hesitant to use one my reef tanks but in FO or FOWLR they can have a place due to the high fish load.

Just remember, that in order to be effective, the unit has to process as high of volume of water at one time as is possible. Otherwise the treated water goes back out with the tank water and the little buggies get another chance to multiply. The price goes up with the amount of volume the unit is able to handle.

Anybody done any comparisons or have a brand they are happy with?

I find that Aquanetics are a good overall one for the price. Retail a 8 watt goes for $119,15 watt for $149,25 watt $169 and $209 for the 30 watt(but twice as long as the 25 watt!). This if for a non Quartz inline model. They also will give you a chart on recomended water flow for each unit. They also give you a chart showing water volume and it's effectivness on certain size organisms. The slower the water through the UV the more organism it will cover killing, so don't plan on using your return pump to run the UV. I would recomend about 200 gph for even the 25 watt unit.

Contact time is critical with UV sterilizer if the water goes thru too fast it isn't gonna be effective. Personally I think they are of more benefit on a Q tank than a main tank. I would be leary using one on a fish only with live rock scenario as it may nullify any plankton being produced. On a reef tank it would be only as a last resort,IMO, but then others have used them with good results. While I feel they maybe a useful tool for dealing with disease outbreaks always keep in mind you are treating symptoms and not the primary cause, most healthy, well fed, and stress free fish can fight off pathogens on their own if the previous parameters are met.

Quartz makes it easier to change the bulb. I think personally the dissadvantage would be a build up on the sleeve can lower the lights effectiveness. Although with a good uv bulb you may not have a build up I am not sure. Well with the easier change of the bulb you will have less maint on the seals.(sorry talking to myself again) Then the cost would come into effect.
