turbo or not to turbo

I read that a hang on berlin turbo was not as good as a standard
Is this the same for a sump model ?
Is the black painted background just for asthetics ?

I like sump versions of skimmers better, often they outperform the hang on version, tho I dont know in this case. I have always thought the Berlin triple bypass thingy was a bit to complicated for my taste, but they seem to work OK for mid price unit

I would use an in-sump skimmer and also it just looks better not to have a skimmer hanging on the tank. We have the Berlin triple pass, and I don't know what's complicated - Doug? One thing, I CAN adjust it, whereas the in-sump skimmer we got for the 125 fowlr we cannot adjust, and sometimes we get a two-gal. bucket of skim-sludge-water over a 2-3 day period. It doesn't have an adjustable venturi thing, but one we had to add to the Mag 5 pump that runs it, and it's not adjustable. Can't remember the name brand, and nothing is written on the unit. Came from PA, recommended by Jason, and it works fine, but I like the Berlin better.

Our son Troy had a Big Mombasa hang-on on his 30-gal and it worked real well for him. Sometimes it was tricky to adjust, and he used a big mop bucket for overflow. Rarely did it get so full as to be scary.

fwiw,
Shirley

I was told the classic did not come with a pump it costs 155.99
the turbo comes with the turbo impeller & pump 199.99
I am understanding that the venturi is the pump
correct or not

I loce my Turbofloater skimmer. It came with a Rio2100, which is a terrible pump & doesn't like to restart. But as far as the skimmer goes, it does a fine job on my 90G & was easy to put together & easy to clean.

No, the skimmer does not include a pump. We use the Mag 7 pump for ours. We dumped the Rios last summer. They didn't go bad on us, but they have a reputation of going bad, spewing gunk into your system from their insides, and such.

The venturi is part of the skimmer. On my son's Big Mombasa, the venturi was part of the pump.

Some of the skimmmers, like the Turbo Flotor use the needle wheel impellor pumps. I prefer straight forward venturi skimmers,
I been waiting to hear Jenns review of the Nautilus skimmer

There is a HUGE aftermarket improvement on all the Berlin Red Sea skimmers, in which ytou remove the venturi that is in the skimmer and replace it with the Kent Turbo Venturi (3/4") and make a few modifications to the exhaust side of the skimmer to reduce the noise. I have done this with the 50-250 model and it works like a champ!
