Mule Team borax as a buffer standard and an electrode testing solution, it works great for cheking the meter and it is absolutely accurate, cheap, and easy to use.

Interesetingly enough, the pH electrodes I have should be by all rights totally shot, but are still withing 0.05 of the new meter I just bought.
Go figure, the KCl shoud have disappeared brom the electrodes eons ago. Heh, the DSB must be full of Mercury (or Silver nitrate) by now...
