Question

Ozone Use????

Fellow Enthusiasts,

I hooked up my ozonizer (Aquazone 100 deluxe with controller/monitor) and the water turned cloudy, is this normal? I have a rio 14HF feeding a coralife ozone reactor which then exits to a coralife chemical chamber full of carbon to strip the water of any remaining ozone and then the water exits back into the sump. On the injection side, I have a Luft air pump pushing air through the ozonizer and into the ozone reactor. I also have the exit air hole of the ozone reactor plugged so that no ozone or air exits without going through the carbon chamber. Is a cloudy tank normally the result of using ozone??? I ran water thru the ozone reactor and carbon chamber for about an hour along with pre-rinsing the carbon and the tank was still clear prior to starting the ozone. Please help I am puzzled.

TIA - B

Bryan, I'm sorry I can't help. Never used ozone not at home or at the store. I have been told that if you can smell a clorine (?) smell, it's too much ozone

I will be watching this thread so I can learn too.

Lise, great, put us on the spot!

i am looking up info now, but all of my books are telling me squat. i have one, but it is kinda old. i also have never had one. to gadgety for my tastes.

from the brief discription i have, i can see how it could cloud the water initially. as it is killing any small organisms that are flowing through it. once the number of free floating critters is neutralized by the ozonater the tank should clear up.

from what i have heard, they are difficult to keep dialed in. if to much is entered into the system, massive deaths could occur. i think most people use UV instead of ozone because of the risks.

sorry this is all i got. hopefully more will chime in. it is getting late over here on the right coast.

G~

Bryan

sounds like it's reacting to something in the carbon. Try swapping brands.

Are you using the ozone to feed a skimmer?

No I'm not using it to feed the skimmer. The I set it up to run on a completely separate loop. I shut the ozonizer off last night before bed and the ORP was at 200mV. When I got up this morning it was at 119mV. Now this seams really strange to me as it was hovering around 180mV steadily before I even used the ozonizer and now it has dropped to an all time low afterwards?????????

Turn your rheostat down and start monitoring it again. You're adding too much, that's why you can't hold your orp right now.

You know those things work a whole lot better when you use them to feed a skimmer. and you don't have to use near as much either.
