Ozone?

Oh mighty TRT gods.

What are your thoughts on using ozone in your reef tanks? Is this just another way to spend money or are they a usefull addition? Reading about them on the web is confusing at best, which usually means they are only needed if you do not have a hole in your pocket.

Thanks,

G~

LOL Geoff,

We use ozone for different reasons around here. As far as hobbyist uses, I really don't like it. Not because it doesn't do it's job but because it's tricky to adjust.

Besides, it can give me a whopper of a headache!

Why were you thinking of using it?

Jerel

I have used Ozone in the past --- injected into the skimmer in an attempt to increase the redox potential. You do need to the run the skimmer output water through carbon in order to remove any residual ozone. Also the air comming from the skimmer would need to be run through carbon.

I really didn't notice a big difference in the condition of the tank because of this. I eventually quite using it cause it was a big pain in the rear and the benifits just didn't seem to outweigh the pain.

Don't think I'll ever do it again. Just way to much hassle for a reef tank.

But the benefits for a fish only system for controlling parasites might be a differnt situation --- never tried it for that but then again I have never had anything but a reef tank.

Spanky-I was thinking of it because I was going to get an aquacontroller II for my 125. I hate to have an option that is under utilized, because I have not been fully educatied in the need for it. They have an ORP controller option, I was thinking of using. From what it seems it looks like it is an option put on for those that think it is necessary.

Thanks,

G~

Geoff --- in my above post I also had a controller but it didn't make it any easier.

Ozone was one of those fad deals sort of like plenums back in the early 90's. But as a manufact. once you incorporate it into your design you just don't take it out. Haven't herd of many people using ozone in their reef lately.

You might consider running the redox prob just to monitor. That alone will give you a visual (digital) indication of the water quality in your tank and could possibly give you an early warning sign of something going amiss ---- but your corals will also give you that warning sign.
