New to board - Skimmer question
I am looking to upgrade my protein skimmer. I have to use a HOT skimmer. I was looking at the Berlin Turbo HOT or the AquaC Remora Pro. Any opinions/observations would be appreciated.
Thank you. Happy New Year to everyone. I have learned lots just reading this board. Oh, my tank is a 125 FOWLR and a DSB. Been running 5 months now.

I have a friend who just sold me his Berlin Turbo in favor of the Remora Pro. After buying the pro, he's said that they both skim pretty much the same amount, but the remora has a prefilter box that not only makes it more attractive, but a little more efficient. You can't go wrong either way, but I'd go with the pro!

Hi Reefer94! I have a Remora Pro Skimmer/w filter box on my 80 gallon reef tank and it works great for me. I am not so sure that the Remora Pro would be ideal for a 125 gallon tank.
I think a in sump skimmer would be better for you but don't know enough about them so maybe others will add to this! Johnny
P.S. Maybe on a FOWLR tank it would be fine! Not sure though!

In terms of simplicity, the remora pro is the winner. Easier to set up, adjust and maintain. But based on efficiency of skimming I think the Berlin would be a better choice for a 125g tank, UNLESS (always a caveat isn't there? ) you opt for the MagDrive upgrade to the remora pro which would probably give you a great skimmer for that tank.

There is a Turbofloater HOT which might be a better choice for that size of tank.

Hi Bear -
I have a Remora Pro and a regular Remora - both are very good. If you go with the Remora Pro go with the upgraded pump/powerhead instead of the Rio.
I also have the prefilter box I can sell if you are interested, won't fit in my 70 gallon tank but you should have plenty of room.

Hello Bear,

Good to have you with us!
What all do you have in your tank?
I've got a Remora on my 55; fine skimmer and very well made. The Remora Pro should be fine. I've also heard good things about the Precision Marine HOT-1, though I haven't seen one in operation.
Again, welcome to TRT!!

Wow!
Thanks for all the responses! I ordered the Remora Pro with the Mag pump. I did not get the pre-skim box. Is that something essential? It was going to be about $50 bucks more. Thought I would try it without first. Thanks again. This is a great forum.

Fishdaddy
I have a 125 fowlr and a dsb set up for about five months now. Started with a Seaclone. Have been skimmerless for two months. I have caulerpa growing well in my tank along with several varieties of snails etc. I started with a mix and match special from IPSF. Two serpent stars, one sea cucumber, hermits. I recently added a small Snowflake Moray. Looking to add a Mineatus Grouper in a few weeks. That is why I want to add a good skimmer. I don't expect to be able to stay skimmerless once I add more fish. No room for a sump. Using two Aquaclear 500 without media for water circulation. They are full of little sponges. Lots of life in the system. Hope this didn't go too long.

Hey bear8640! I got the filter box with the Remora Pro and it does take the film cover off the top of the water and makes it real clear in my opinion. Johnny

I wouldn't trust a Berlin H.O.T. on a 125gal tank. I've heard good things about PM's H.O.T. but no personal experience and the person I know using one wouldn't recommend it for a tank over 75gal. You don't have to have a sump to run a bigger skimmer you just have to be a little more creative with where you put it and how you plumb it.

Is the skimmer box you have for the Remora Pro with the Mag350? I would be interested in that if it's the one you have.
Thank you.
