DIY Beckett Skimmer Design

Good Morning TRT!

I have these misc parts that I aquired from an earlier purchase that I'd like to use to build a Beckett injected skimmer. A picture of the parts and the design follow.

Though I could follow the base reaction chamber design, I would like to stick to the more simple columnar design to reduce costs and keep the option of converting to a venturi in the future (why I'm not sure).

The parts that I have (pictured in next message) are used bio-tower, a collection cup from another skimmer, and fluidized sand bend filter for a Beckett chamber and skimmer neck. I will add the Beckett head, pvc, and misc valves.

I am most worried about the return flow. The concern is that the weigh of the water in the return column will be too much forthe system and push the foam too far in to the neck. Though I have seen this in come designs, I am not confident in this one. I would drill the reaction tube side and provide an exit there, but I'd had to ruin the original bio-tower.

The plan is to have this unit sit outside the sump unless there's a good reason to go in-sump. I have an Iwaki 30RLT to power it and I believe from what I've read that's enough pump.

My best adjustment in the design is to shorten or lengthen the neck to the collection cup. I just need the cup to clear the return and leave room for the Beckett feed. This is the reason for the off center cup.

Comments?

Thanks!
Joe

Flatfish,

I just got done building a beckett skimmer because my small Lifereef venturi was just not keeping up with the junk in my tank.

I used these plans and modified them slightly. Mostly to use my Lifereef skimmer collection system which prevents floods and eliminates smells.

http://www.reefkeepers.org/visions/gallery/hsa/FAQ.htm

Look at the HSA skimmer for some ideas as well. The beckett head is just a cheap and very effective venturi. Haven't tried but I don't think that a 30 will be enough. I use a 55 but it is a bit much for this size skimmer. This design is very cheap and easy to build and puts out very, very dry foam. It took almost a week to fully break in and is EXTREMELY sensitive to hands, food, etc. in the tank. Other than the sensitivity this thing is great. If I were to do it again, I would make the down tube 3" and to riser 6" with the Iwaki 55 pump. I changed to outlet of the downtube to an 45 deg. elbow to add swirl to the riser just like the HSA. One of the nice features of this skimmer is that it completely insensitive to changing water levels in the sump.

Let me know if I can help you more.

Good Luck!

Bill
