working with acrylic

hey all...

i just bought two used 20g acrylic tanks...i got a pretty good deal on them and i thought they'd make great sump/refugiums.

the only problem is that they've been drilled a couple of times in wierd places. the guy i bought them from had some 3.5 in round acrylic patches that he gave me.

can anyone reccomend a brand of acrylic epoxy...where's the best place to get this stuff? is there any brand that claims to be aquarium-safe or are they all safe?? any tips?

go to a plastic shop and ask for weldon, #3 is like water for close fits # 16 is thicker for minor fills and #40 when the **** thing just wont fit. Its like a tar, and weldon when dried isnt a glue it accually melts the acrylic into one piece again

If you can't get it locally, try this place:

If it is for the sump, I would also recomend putting some silicon around the part that you glue for some extra protection.

I'm thinking that Weldon #16 is far easier to use- Just spread a circle of it on the patch, place the patch in place, and place a 1/2 gallon jug of water on it. Then don't touch it for 12 hours.

The Weldon will melt the patch to the tank, and it will never come off or leak. With Epoxy, you always have the chance of it breaking loose.

Ditto on the Weldon,,,you'd be better off with a "bonded/plastic-welded" condition than a silicone seal.'specially if you never are gonna use the opening again,,
