wiring relay

I just wired up my auto top-off using two float valves directly to a powerhead that will feed the sump. I started to get a "tingle" from the water and traced it to the new float valves. I know alot of people wire in relays to avoid this situation. Could someone explaine or show me somewhere where it tells you how to wire a relay between 12v and 120v? I can do most anything electronically, just need directions
