What does a SUMP do?

Hello Everyone:

What are the advantages of running a Sump? What exactly does a sump do? Do I need one for a 75g reef?

I am a newbie starting a 75g reef setup using the natural (Berlin) system (LR, LS, Protein Skimmer, someday Corals, Inverts, & Fish). I have been following these two texts: " The New Marine Aquarium" by Michal S. Paletta and "The complete book of the Marine Aquarium" by Vincent B. Hargreaves. Nether text so much as mentions a Sump or Refugium.

A sump is simply a container of water seperate from the display tank. It has many uses and benefits, all of which are described well in the following links...
