Question

Three Plumbing Related Questions

These questions have probably been answered elsewhere, so my apologies for repeating them. I'm about to start working on the plumbing on my tank and was wondering:

1. Is there an advantage to using slip connections (in the PVC pipes) instead of threaded connections?

2. Is the "PVC Cement" available at HD safe for a reef tank? I looked everywhere on the container but could not tell whether it was silicon based. FWIW, the container did say that it was safe for potable water.

3. Is it necessary to use "PVC Primer" before using PVC Cement? The primer available at HD is called "Purple PVC Primer" (I can't remember the manufacturer's name). And is the PVC Primer safe for reef tanks?

Thanks.

K.M.

I used both. Make sure you use some tephlone tape on the threads. As for the slip connections, make sure that you fully cover both ends...I used some from HD, had a red or brown lable and it was clear. I was told to just let it dry out for a couple of days and then its not toxic. I did and my hermits are alive still. ...I didnt use any primer but I made sure that the ends where clean and sanded them just alittle bit so that they we bond together. Also make sure that your cuts are clean...my $0.02...good luck...

No real advantage that I can think of except that slip connections are less likely to leak when properly glued. Threaded connections can seep for a few reasons like not enough tape, onot tight enough, etc. The main thing is slip connections are permanent, threaded are not.
I always use primer on pvc connections. It preps the joint for a nice connection. I can't think of a reason not to use it other then it's ugly color and that can behelped if you are careful and don't slop it all over Bob

If you use the redhot PVC glue u dont need a primer, its a self priming glue.

I like slip connections better than threads, because in my hands about half of my threaded connections leak the first time and have to be redone, even though I used teflon tape and such. I have never had a slip connection leak. Also, use unions so you can easily dismantle pipes if you need to.

I use the purple primer with standard PVC cement (in the green can at HD).

Regardless of this all alot of threaded connections leak due to being over tightened more than under tightened. As for pvc cement any will be fine as long as you don't get the stuff in the yellow can.
