Question

submersible or not?

I am planning a 125 tank with a 30 gal sump.I have a protien skimmer and am wondering about the pros and cons of submersable pumps compared to external. It seems to me the subs would be quieter.

sometimes submersible pumps can be an unwanted source of heat.....

I run a Mag 18 on a 75/55 and still need 3 heaters. I dont see pump heat as an issuse on that size tank, FWIW
What skimmer and what are you planning on powering it with, Any ideas what return pump you might want to use
What type of reef habitat are you wanting to create?

Hi Jeff and Welcome to The Reef Tank.

I like submersables for two reasons: They take up less room in the stand, and if they leak it won't matter. They will add some heat to the water and if you're on the edge of high temps in the summer time then this could be an issue. If your house is air conditioned you should be able to offset any heat with AC and fans. If it's not then inline pumps might be worthwhile.

Of course if you have some spare $$$ laying around after setting up the beast you could just get a chiller and it wouldn't matter.

I love submersable much quieter and like Rick said take less room in the stand.Heat is not an issue on my 100 gal. just run fans across sump if heat is an issue or fork it over for a chiller.

Smile

It seems that a sub wouldfit my needs. thanks for the input. The skimmer I have ordered is from my reef creations, the mr-1. they recomend a few diferent pumps-mag 12,sen 900,Iwaki 40,rlt. some can be submersible or not. Im leaning toward soft corals and a few fish.for now I am tring to set up the tank right so that I can accomidate changes later. Im focused now on set-up and purchasing the right amount of live sand/ arogonite and live rock.

We have all submirsable pumps except for 1 ampmaster 3000 for a closed loop. We use Mag pumps on everything and I like them. I would recomend the mag 12 for the skimmer and wither a mag 12 or mag 18 for the return.

Agree on the MAg 1200, The Sen 900 is almost 3 times its size, takes up more room

I also run 2 mag 12's in a 110 and dont have a problem with them. I am going to run a 18 or a 24 on my new tank I think. Shouldnt be a problem. Right now I have a mag 12 running my GEO skimmer and the other as a return pump
