sea swirls
First off does anyone know if the SeaSwirl is available up here in Canada?
Secondly, if any of you are using it how is its reliability and durability? As far as I know it will cost me close to $300Cdn to get one here and I'd hate to have it only last a year or even two.
I have a wavemaker and am wondering if anyone has imput to whether I even need one. I guess need is not the best choice of words but you know what I mean.

Troy,
I think that I have just recently seen a couple of Sea Swirls in the classifieds on a couple of BB's for a lot less than $300 cdn. I think that if you have 4 maxijet 1200's on your wavemaker that the Sea Swirl would be unneccesary. Or OTH, two 1/2" or larger sea swirls and the wavemaker would not be needed, just a couple of powerheads to supplement the swirls. What pump would you be using with them?
Scott
PS I make my sand run nexy weekend and would be able to bring a few things back across the border. Two of us will be down for 72+ hours.

Scott,
I'm planning on getting a Little Giant 4MDQX-SC to run two returns to the tank. It should have enough poop to feed a refugium at a later date.
I got the price of the Sea Swirl from Marine Depot and then added the old conversion on our Canadian pesos, I then figure the tax man would get involved not to mention duty.
Good luck on the trip down.

Hey Scott thanks, I don't know how I missed them. That is almost exactly the price I had after converting Marine Depot's price to Cdn.

Jeez guys I thought $120-$130 US was outrageous, but they seem to work well.
Have you ever thought of using a wiper motor assembly to sweep returns? Just a thought I am lookin into

Welcome to Canada Doug. Of course it is the same price up here for you with the currency exchange.
What are your plans with the wiper motor? I'd like to see the plan when you have it ready.

Geedog. Wiper motors dont turn back and forth, they only turn in one direction. They way the linkage is hooked up to them is what makes the wipers go back and forth. Its hard to explain but if you saw it working you would know what I mean. Good idea though.
Do you Canadians make more money to offset the high costs that I keep hearing about and does everything in Canada cost more. Just curious.

Dan I am aware of the mechanism involve. Would have to fab PVC shafts to drop down to tank level with some type of bracket to affix the returns to with flexible connections from the return pipe to the nozzle or whatever that does the sweeping. The actual motor and linkeage would mount above the tank at the back and extend down into the tank. Olderstyle wipers that both move from center to ouside and back would give nice conflicting currents when they meet. Even a single unit like rear window wiper would be good. Also you can get a wiper delay switch to fine tune sweep speed Just a thought

I have the 3/4" Sea Swirl model for about five months. A couple of weeks ago I could start hearing the gears moving ... but it seems to have stopped.
I also have a WaveStrip which I used for about 2 hours. At the time, it made my tank look cluttered with powerheads so I took it off and bought a Sea Swirl. Since then I haven't looked back ... I really like the random motion of the water but it's sooo expensive.
Boom, I don't think we make more money, partly due to the fact we have a high income tax and a weak Canadian dollar. However, not everything is expensive in Canada. Use food and clothing for example, I find these goods cheaper here. When I went to the US a couple of months ago I found myself paying the same amount I would in Canada except in US funds. The same five US dollar meal at a local fast food place would cost five CDN dollars in Canada. I also found toothpaste noticeablely more expensive in the US than Canada. LOL, of all things.
Overall, I do find that the US has a better selection.

Jeff,
Wavestrip is a wave making device that you plug power heads into. It turns them on and off at intervals. It looks like a power bar with 3 outlets that are adjustable and 3 that aren't.

Jeff,
I'm a ways from springing for a $279 dollar Sea Swirl. I don't have the Wavestrip, I have a RedSea Wavemaster Pro . I'm just trying to get some ideas for the new tank I'm setting up. I think I'll wait and see how Doug does with the wiper motor idea. I really like the Wavemaster but it does have its downside with all the powerheads in the tank. You can get the wavestrip cheap down in the States.
