SCWD "Squid" Anyone used this before?

Just installed a new SCWD. It is a device that splits a return and alternates the flow. Put it on a mag 5, on a 58 gallon tank, and really liked it. Just wanted to see if anyone had any luck

thanks,
matt

i saw that somewhere, but was a little confused on the intermittently switches between the two outlets part. it said that it is based on flow. they said as you got near 1400gph it switched rather quickly, but did not say how quickly. how fast does it oscilate with 500gph?

Have read that the manufactuer recommends you filter your water coming into the device or may lead to premature failure. Lot's of people with reeftanks don't believe in mechanical filtering so that living organisms can pass through the plumbing system.

I've been reading about those and wanted to see one in action.
Is yours on a tank in the store? If so, I'd like to see it. Sally

Does it make any loud noises when the flow is switched,ie clicking or oscilations?

I saw the device. Pretty neat looking. It's not very big and I didn't hear any noises coming from it but I wasn't really listening for it.

I have been running one of these for about a week. It's pretty cool. On a quiet one pump at about 7 feet of head pressure, it switches about every 6 seconds. On a mak4 it switches about every 4 seconds, but made bubbles. It's not completly silent, but it isnt that loud either. The bubbles in my sump from the durso standpipe are louder. The mak4 was certianly way louder than the squid. Here's a photo of how i have mine installed.

With the canopy closed, you can't hear it.
I used to use the pipes you see near the bottom of the picture, but i think the way i have it now gives me a little bit more flow. You can't see the elbows at the end of the pipes, hehe.

Ours is under a stand so we cannot hear it. I have it on a magdrive 5 and it seems to change about every 15 seconds maybe. i haven't seen any bubbles come from it or anything. i have found no real reason no to have one on your tank.

So for almost half the price of one Sea swirl I can theoretically add 2 of these split off Mag 18 closed loop and get some really nince random flows in my 75g?
Has anyone bought the :3/4 return fittings from that page, they look a lot like the Magnum 350 hose returns I have now, which are actually 5/8 or so
Sorry now I am pickin knits

i didn't think of using more than one. that is a really good idea. but it would have to be a big pump like the mag 1800. you would have to use a "T" fitting and 2 of the squids.

I am hopping on the bandwagon for this one. I am going to try one out on the sump return.

I'm ordering 2 today for my 135g.

Doug,

Did you get the mag18 hooked up on a closed loop? Is it quiet?

FWIW I'm also ordering a set of 4 pre-filter sponges(mag pump type) to keep sand ect. out of the scwd's. I'll just change them every week or so like I do on my mag pumps.

somewhat off topic, but where do you get those black flexible outlet thingys like in the picture, I have never seen them anywhere and I would rather have that than plain old schedule 40 elbows.

Ordering my squid today

Mike
