Plumbing into Sump

Right now the drain line from my overflow to the sump is just hanging in the sump. I'm just put a modification of the Durso standpipe on my overflow and this seems to create a surge of bubbles going into the sump, I don't mind the bubbles except this makes it loud than it used to be. Since I'm also putting together a new sump I'm wondering if I drill a bulkhead into the side of the sump for the drain line to attach to if this will reduce the surging. Or is there someother configuration that will reduce this?

Thanks

Whats the flow rate from your over flow? I have about 800gph and the spalsh or bubbles drive me nuts. My next plan is the 2 1" lines into a 1 1/2" Tee that goes down and turns back up so the water comes out just above the surface and flows over the return and spills a short distance to eliminate the waterfall and gurgle effect

jegel,

Try submerging your lines in the sump, this will help eliminate some of the noise. The bubbles are one of the side effects of the Durso, you could try putting a T on the bottom of your overflow lines as this will help dissapate the bubbles when they enter the sump.

Doug1,

I tried plumbing my two overflow lines into a T and I thought they actually became louder. I found the best solution to be to put the overflow lines plumbed on the back side of the sump.

from what I can figure my flow rate is about 450gph. I'm not sure how accurate that is. I have 1 overflow with a 1" line to the sump and a 3/4' return line.

Right now the drain line is under water, it is basically hanging straight down from the overflow, into the sump with the end about 4" underwater. Its not the constant bubbles that bother me but once in a while a build up of bubbles comes out and makes a ton of noise.

So does everyone have lots of noise coming from their sump because of the drain line?

In my experience the higher the water volume and velocity the more noise it creates. I presently have 2 1" returns going into the sump with spraybar affairs on them to try and
minimise noise. Its better than dumping it straight in at the water lone or below. My thought on the arrangement I described it the water will ooze up from the U'd return pipe and liberate air and flow over and into the water with out creating alot of splash. Thats why it needs to be bigger than the return hose or pipe.

In my experience, two things will help withthe noise.

1. The standpipe from your bulkhead fitting to the Durso mod that is under water needs to be larger than the bulkhead pipe size. For example, if your bulkhead fitting is for 1" pipe, use 1-1/2" pipe to build the overflow in your overflow pipe.

I haven't yet figured out why this works, and it only seems to make a difference once you exceed a certain flow rate for the size of bulkhead fitting you have. I've experimented with this a little, enough to know it helps but not enough to know why yet.

2. Quite by accident, I found that if you route the return through a couple of nearly horizontal bends instead of straight into the sump, it also seems to help. So instead of:

you might try:

This seems to work best if the two horizontal sections of drain pipe slope slightly downward.

I also found the larger the drain for a given flow rate, the less the noise.

All of these mods seem to be associated with providing a way for the air that is sucked down into the pipes with the draining water to escape from the top of the pipe assemblies instead of being carried into the sump.

Hope this helps,
Glenn
