Plumbing for dummies....
Ok I'm getting mad, I see all these sweet plumbing pictures of other people's tanks and mine is all crappy!!!! Here are a few quesitons I have, and please forgive if I have no idea what I am talking about.
1. Where do you get the flex PVC? I dont think I have ever seen it at HD. Is it worth the money?
2. Also where do you get the gray I think they are called nipples (the one end looks like a spout, the other usually is threaded, I believe they are for flex tubing to go over)? Again this would be nice to know
3. Any other "Plumbing for dummies" suggestions would always be good. I have an older LG pump that I would like to use for a closed loop, but I want to set it up all nice and stuff .
Thanks

Hello a great web page that you can find every thing you need is
http://www.savko.com they have the flex PVC and yes it is great the grey bulk heads you ask about are there they are schedule 80. I did allot of looking around before I did my plumbing for my new tank. One thing for sure when plumbing do lots of drawing on how you want it to look this is what help me....

I just bought some of the "spa"/flex PVC at lowes, 1" ID and 1 1/2" ID. The grey fittings your talking about are also available at Lowes and HD. They are nipple by NPT fittings. All fo these items should be available at the plumbing section of Lowes or HD. You'll also need to plan out what and how you are plumbing, make a list of all of the bends and then figure out what pieces of PVC you will need then go get everything. Also if you have the room, use 2 45 degree elbows instead of 1 90 degree elbow as it will help to kep the flow of water higher as there will be less restrictions. "SPA" or flex PVC is definately worth it. It will bend as it is soft and you can achieve 90 degree bends without having the restictions a 90 degree elbow would cause.

Thats a great question !
I have the dumb question,I took the rubber seal off the stand pipe (The LFS told me to because it was a salt tank & seated it with silicone ) was that good advice ?

Are you referring to the gasket? If so you really should have it on there.

Thanks for all the tips so far. I just got back from visiting a fellow reefer's place where he is setting up a 350 or something like that and I just loved his plumbing as well. I definitely thing flex PVC is the way to go because of all the 90 degree elbows that would be required if I did everything hard. I'd just love to get this closed loop going and get some really good flow going in my tank. Of course the other problem is the LG pump that I would be using seems to have a little vibration/noise issue, but I can address that later . Thanks so far, and feel free to add more.

That depends. Is there already water in the tank? Does it leak. Would it be more trouble to change it later than now?

I would go ahead and change it if you're just starting to fill it.
