Opinions Please..Closed loops still needed with
some of the new surge/wavemaker devices ie. Wave2K's, Reeftecs and Tunze streams? Would these devices take the place of a CL?

I think you would spend more if you went with the wave makers/surge device. You could put some valves on the CL that open/close at different times during the day. I think it was Mojo that had those on his CL. Not sure on how maintenance and cleaning ease is - if it's needed. I'm sure if he reads this he could help more with the pros and cons.
Mojo - the plumb-master!!
(Mojo, if the tank doesn't go in this weekend Mojo, I might bring the wife up for a roadtrip next weekend - she can get us beers and clean up the dog pee)

TE the red sea wave maker is a power on/off for powerheads, the others listed are alternative current makers.
We need URL's for these thing

IMO if you go with a Tunze Stream you will not have any other need for water circulation.
I have the 6110 on my 180 and so far have only turned it up to 50% power.
Keep in mind that this pump is very powerful and I would not recommend the 6110 for any tank under 4' and possibly even 6'.

One thing a closed loop does that the ReefTec,s or Tunze does not do, is stay out of the tank. Depends on your liking.
I am trading in my closed loops for Tunze stream pumps. Lower wattage, more flow. And more $$$$$$$$$$$$.
As a matter of fact, because of my tanks place in the wall & fishroom behind, I can have ugly equipment. As my counter current skimmer & scrubber, can both run direct from the tanks overflows, I am removing my return & sump completely.
The flow will be generated by Tunze stream pumps and my surge from the scrubber.
As for closed loops, IMO, they are far better than having powerheads in ones tank. My 225 runs alone on the return pump & a closed loop system.

Does anyone remember a similar unit, that was a DIY, proppelor blade adaptor for submersable pump?

Thats the controller page. Click on turbelle pumps, then on stream pumps.
Yes Doug, I can have lots of ugly junk back there. I am either going to run a pair of 6080 pumps or the 6110 contolled unit.
