My new sump (with pic)

After 4 months of trying to eliminate the bubbles from the skimmer and overflows from going back into the tank, I ditched the Sterlite container and replaced it with a 40 gal breeder. What a difference! I was able to install 4 acrylic baffles in the new sump to eliminate 90% of the bubbles. I updated my plumbing page with more pictures Click Here

RWD I was just looking at your pics of the BX2. You were talking about having problems with bubbles. I might be wrong but in looking at your skimmer it doesn't appear that you have a sponge on the compartment on the far right of the skimmer. My BX2 came with a large sponge that sits in this compartment and it greatly reduces any bubbles flowing into the sump. It is just narrow and sits in the area to the right of the plate which adjusts the water height in the skimmer. If I'm wrong and you do have one please disregard the message. If you don't you may want to get one.

Cool

Very nice setup. I esp liked how you labeled your piping with direction flow. Looks like a very well thought out setup

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your comments. My skimmer did come with a sponge but I don't use it. I find that sometimes it would get waterlogged and slide down to the bottom of the sponge compartment. This would cause a restriction and raise the water level in the skimer throwing off adjustments and overflowing the skimmer. At times it would work perfectly for a month and then overflow. Other times it would overflow after a few days. It was more trouble then it was worth so I removed it. I cleaned the sponge all the time so I don't think it was getting clogged with stuff. I even tried bio-balls instead with no luck. It works great now because the water level in the skimmer stays consistant.
Thanks, Bob

geedoug,
Thanks for your comments. Yeah, it does get a little confusing with all the pipes going everywhere . I really marked them so that if something went wrong and I wasn't around, hopefully my wife could figure it out. Bob

good plan, disaster rarely strikes when I'm there so its good if others can find critical elements under stress

In the same vein, I normally use the heater in my overflow to heat up salt water. I place the bucket beside the tank and just move the heater there. I recently plugged it into an X-10 module, and since I have two heaters, they are HE1 and HE2.

When I make the transfer, I used to unplug the heater, mive it to the bucket, and then plug it back in again. Now, I just go to JAqua and turn it off, then move it and turn it back on again....which I did.

But after turning it on, I noticed it wasnt on even though the water in the bucket was in the 50's. Ahh, it wasnt HE1, it was HE2 that I should have turned off and on. Luckily the heater was off anyway when I made the transfer.

To make a long story short, I added a pop-up comment field to JAqua which displays when you hover the mouse pointer over the device name. Now when I do that over HE2, a window pops up and says "turn this heater off for water changes..stupid". So now I can label all the devices so I know which one's which.

The box said "Use Win 95 or better", I chose better so I run OS/2!
