Mag Pumps question
Hi,
Going through the stuff I received a few days ago, I noticed that the Mag 12 (I didn't check the other pumps) has screws that hold the impeller cover in place. I read in the box it can be submerged and used in saltwater tanks and I've known of many people using Mags in reef tanks. I was wandering if those what seems to be metal screws aren't harmful for the system ??
I just want to make sure I can submerge them for sure before I set everything up....
Thanks

I'll have to check but have Mag 24s in the tank sump and outside pond and no problems.

I don't know if you'd have to worry about freshwater systems. But what I've read and heard is that metals in a saltwater/reef tank are not acceptable. Titanium is the only metalic material I think is compatible with saltwater tanks (used in chiller probes, ground probes, etc).

Graz I have noticed that to and run all mag pumps and have never had a problem yet they must be ss because they dont rust
so I would think they are ok would also think they wouldnt make them for aquariums if they were bad.Alot of people on here run them maybe someone else will chime in on this. Casey

You will probably notice eventually the more you take the screws on/off. Plus if not carefully those screws strip out because it is just plastic your screwing into.
I personally wouldn't trust the larger Mags as external pumps.

When I saw the box I was under the impression that they were intended more for freshwater use, like ponds, fountains, etc. and realised that maybe people used them as a cheap alternative vs. more costly pumps, like Iwakis. I just wanted to make sure....
Thanks

This pump comes with a 3/4" mnpt outlet. What size pipe should I do the plumbing with? 3/4"? bigger?

I guess I should try the highest size possible for less friction....right?

think of it more as back pressure than friction.

you are right about thinking to keep friction down to a minimum. the friction causes back pressure to the pump. as you know certain pumps handle back pressure differently. this is why i suggested thinking of it in terms of back pressure not in simple friction.
am i making any sense here?

oh yes.... i guess we're calling it different names.
thnx Geoff, thnx Casey.
I think I'll go with the 1 1/4".
I'll start buying materials. I'm starting with the Dursos first.
I'll post pics of the progress.

you can also switch out the metal screws for nylon screws(HD).
I'll see if I can find the thread where it lists the right sizes.........
