Mag or Sen pump
I'm getting ready to upgrade the pump on the skimmer in my prop tank. I'm going with either a Mag 9 or a Sen 900. Does anyone know if either of these pumps are prone to leak when used inline?

Rick I'm currently running a Mag12 and ran a Mag 7 previously, both of them inline and have not had anyproblems with either one leaking.

I use a Sen 700 submersed in a 52 I maintain. Lots less heat than a mag.
I like 'em both though...

I have been using a SEN 900 inline for circulation for about 4 months without any problems at all.

Can't comment on the inline leaking but Euroreef sells the SEN (Sedra is the same pump) for their skimmers and they are reliable.

I thought I had read reports of Mags leaking when being used externally. I have both brands and like them both. The Mag 9 is considerably less expensive than the Sen and has more output.
Thanks everyone for your input.

In this installation that shouldn't matter much. I think I'll go with the Mag for the difference in $$$. I could have sworn that I had read numerous reports of Mags leaking but I can't find any threads on it now.

Rick, All of my MAG 2 pumps leak externally.........that is after I clean them and try to reassemble them Brand new they seem fine.

I've taken my Mag 12 apart 3 times so far and the only problem I ran into was that one of the screws holding the face platre on was stripped and won't get completey tight. A new screw one size larger would solve this but I have not replaced it yet. My pump has not leaked even with the one screw not completely tight.
The only draw back on my Mag 12 seems to be that over time it slows down and has to be cleaned. I run my tank skimmerless, now whether or not this factors into how often it has to be cleaned I don't know. I'm considering switching to a external only pump, such as a Dolphin ampmaster, but I don't know if this will make a difference or not as to how often it will need to be cleaned.

Hi Rick,
Hope all is well
Well I have a Mag 24 as return and run it external no problems with this one (knock on wood) but the first one leaked out through the power cord end
New one has been running fine for a few months now replaced under warranty.
All in all still a good pump just made on a bad day at least that's what I hope.

Mini, I thought you went swimming in a shark tank or something you should call or write Welcome back, wanderer
As far as pump maint, IME its a good idea to clean them out on occasion, esp in a reef system where carbonate build up is a possibility. When I get home I will repost the pic of my Sen impellor that was ignored for way too long Thats not to say theres anything wrong with Sens, actually it was a great pump for the money, it continued to work till it seized up form the split part swelling and acting as a brake. A new impellor and it was back running, unfortunatly it exposed the iron core in the impellor and released Fe for a long time before seizing. Needless to say thats not a good thing

Doug can you please define "occasion"? My system isn't even a year old yet and I've had to clean it 3 times already... lol The third tiome was about 3 weeks after we moved to the new house so I figure that moving stirred up enough crap that it dirtied up the back of the impellor where it slides into the "magnet" end of the pump...

I hate to admit this but my Mag 12 is buried so I hardly ever clean it. I hope I'm not playing with fire by neglecting it.
