mag drive pump?
Can the mag drive pumps be used externally? I see the specs say submerged or inline. Does inline mean external? Sorry for the silly question.

That is not a silly ?.
The answer is yes they can be used externally, but I feel that they are not the best pumps to use externally. I would recomend if buying one to find an external only pump. I believe that mag pumps tend to draw more power and add more heat then a good external pump. We are using several mag pumps in the sump and they work great.

I have a Mag12 in my sump for my return and I have to agree Minnreefer they work best and is the most efficient submerged. You can use them for and external pump but there are more energy and heat efficient external pumps out there. JMHO

i was thinking of using two mags (one 5 and one 7) on top of the tank to drive two separate closed loops...would this be a bad idea. i know they are supposed to give off more heat than your average external pump, but would they be more prone to fail as an external vs. submerged?

I believe that mags are very reliable pumpe (even though I have one that is a dirrect short ) I don't think internal vs external has much difference, the only problem that you might have if you switch them on and off is they may not last as long then if you left them run. MAY is the key word.

so what is a good external pump that doesn't use much electricity and give off heat to the water?

I've been running a Mag pump externally for the last 8 months and have not had any problems with it at all...

Do you recommend the 'quarium series, or just the magnetic drive series, any better than others?
thanks

oh yah, the x series says it is to be used without pressure, like for a return line, can the return line be dialed back using a ball valve after the pump if it flows too much water?
