Durso standpipe question and MH heat question

Hey guys and gals,
I am in the tap water test phase of the new reef tank and
using a sump for the first time. I don't know whats right or wrong.

I made the durso standpipes and at first they were doing the toilet bowl flush sounds, I enlarged the air holes at the top and they are running perfectly now. The only thing in question are all the bubbles that are comming out in the sump. The bubbles are large and about 25% air to water rato is going into the sump. Is this right or did I goof up somewhere??

Also a MH question,

Man!! These bad boys are getting hot!!!! They are cooking my glass center brace, too hot to the touch! I am worried of a splash/shock cool busting the brace causing a chain reaction!
Do I need to relax or is this a concern as well?

Cal, are you drain to sump lines discharginging under water, that can causw a lotta noise, better to let it out on the surface or put an elbow fitting on the end and point it up like a fountain.
Re: the glass braces getting way hot. Are you using any kind of fan in the canopy? You need major air movement to prevent heat build up and premature bulb failure

Oh cool, yeah I have the ends about 6" under the sump water level, I will change that now.

And, yes I am running it without a fan at the moment, I have one and will install it now.

Thanks Doug!

the good news is that once you adjust the drain line .. you'll probably have to readjust the airhole in the surso

"have one and will install it now"

*ears perk up for this conversation* Hmmm... Do I detect small glitches in the plan? heh heh And who says you need a fan... I thought MH bulbs were the coolest running bulbs! lol
