closed loop?
just wondering if anyone has tried a closed loop on there tank without drilling the tank at all , just kicking around some ideas on increasing the flow in my tank .
have around 600 to 800gph in my return and 1400gph in PH so far , would like to increase it as well as have less visable clutter in the tank [ 155gal ]
thanks -Russ

you can see what i have done, i got the idea here.
CLS system
the only reason i have the pump in the water now is to keep the noise down. i am going to try another pump and see if it is quieter. i originally just had the two returns and the intake in the tank. somebody here has a better picture of theirs which shows exactly what i am talking about. i may also change it and put the pump back behind the tank and run the plumping up and around. i will loose flow due to all of the bends, but hopefully will be quieter.

I have done just that on our 135, but I did not take pictures yet. It works fairly well but a lot of plumbing and more pipes in the tank. I have 3 1" intakes, a Amp master 3000 and 5 3/4" returns to maximize flow.

so when you move the pump out of the tank , you will just have an intake of 1''to 1 1/2" pipe in the tank , down to the pump and from there able to send it back in in any variation of returns you want.
do you need to prime the pump first when it is out of the tank? i think you had mag5 on your system you were concered with noise ? i run a mag18 for my return but it is in the sump , are they much noisier out of water?
thanks for the information

Yes, you just want to make sure that your connections don't leak

Yes, you do have to prime the plumbing system first which can be a pain but it is not that bad. I do not know if mags are louder outside of the water, I have heard that they are.

i have a mag 7 running the skimmer and it is just about silent but the mag 12 on the CLS is really noisy. i do not know why one would be noisy and the other not.
when the pump was completely out of the water i had a PVC tee inline on the high side of the CLS. i would plug up all of the inlets and outlets. pour water in the tee until it is full. plug up the tee then remove the plugs from the input and the outlets. now you are good to go.

I don't know if this will help or not but it's a picture of the plumbing on the Ampmaster 3000 closed loop in my tank.
Picture
I put ball valves on each of the returns and a union above so that to prime, I just close the valves, open the union and poor the water in. I don't have to prime unless I take the pump off for service or cleaning but it was useful none the less.

thanks Troy , how does your intake work for it? is your tank drilled or do you come in over the top of the tank with your piping
from your picture that looks like the way i was thinking of returning mine , except maybe adding some lockline inside the tank to go from 2 to 4 or more returns to try to get more movement thruout the tank.
thanks -Russ

Russ, the intake is up and over the back. As long as the pump is below the water level there's no problem. I have the pump mounted on the wall about 6" below the water level. The plumbing is all 1.5" and it provides a lot of flow in my tank with a wide dispersal. This is the second tank I've done it on.
