baffle problems

I am just having dificulties with this sump! Its an AGA 40 B, I got some sheets of plexi cut to use as my baffles. Glued them in with GE Silicone I. They won't stay in place. The water just sepeartes it from the silicone. I had a good amount on both sides of the plex too. ???? I have also tried the DAP aquarium stuff in the past and had the same expierience. Is there something strong and safe that I can use? If so, where do I get it?

Thanks
-John

I used Superglue Gell on the edges of the plexi placed the baffles in place let dry over night and then used Clear Aquarium silicon afterwards.

also what thickness is the plexi if it is too thin the water pressure will bow them out then they just pop out no matter how you do it.

Hope this helps a little

I have the exact sump and here is what I did. Measure the space between the baffles and cut two pieces of acrylic the same size. I think mine was 1-1/2" so I cut two pieces of acrylic 1-1/2" X the height of the baffle. Next, glue these pieces between the baffles with aquarium safe silicone. Do this on each side of each baffle. It's best to start off glueing the baffles AND spacers at the same time for a tighter fit. I did it this way nearly 2 years ago and the baffles are rock solid. BTW make sure the glass is VERY clean or the silicone won't stick. HTH, Bob
Here's a pic. Note: I used black silicone to glue the spacers in.

I don't know I took a lot of pictures of the set-up in the beginning but have slacked WAYYYYY off since then. I can't believe it's been set up over two years.

Hey John. Silicone sticks to glass rather well. Unfortunately and to the misery of this aquarist, it does not stick to acrylic, poly or plexiglass Underwater Aquarium Epoxy putty may be necessary. I haven't been able to get superglue to work for me in that respect.

Hmmm...

Chris,

The way it is set up, all the silicone needs to do is cure adhered to the glass, molded around the stationary baffles and spacers as it were, and it possibly forms rib-like grips to keep the acrylic baffles in place ---even though its adhesion to acrylic is relatively weak.

There is no need for a watertight seal nor pressure resistance between the glass and the baffle plates, so I suppose it'd do.

Epoxy has one serious drawback: permanence.
If the executed design doesn't work right, or
if you decide you want to take the thing apart for a simple refit, you are SOL.
