Question

AquaC Remora vs. CPR Bak Pak 2 questions

I am going to be setting up a 29 gallon reef tank on Sunday and realized I still have some decisions. I own both an AquaC Remora (not the Pro) and a CPR Bak Pak 2 (not the 2R). I know both are fine skimmers for the tank. My wife would really like the tank as quiet as possible. Which protein skimmer do you all think will be quieter once broken in? They both have the stock pumps, the Bak Pak has the Rio 600 RVT and the Remora has the Rio 800. I have some Maxi-jet 400's and 1200's too, if anyone has tried them and they are noticably quieter. can you let me know your opinions asap, please? Thank you!
P.S. I'm leaning towards the Bak Pak because i can hide the heater and grounding probe in the open "sump" and haven't figured out how to do that on the Remora yet

JA,
Scroll down to see the comparison I just did between the Remora and BakPak2R.
The Remora is only slightly noisier, have to listen carefully to note the difference. This may be due to the different size of the pumps.
IMHO, if you have the choice, go with the Remora.

The Remora isn't nearly as noisy if you change the Rio pump for a Maxi Jet 1200.

I also have both. The wife made me switch the Remora with the CPR 2R due to the noise. I can barely hear the CPR but the Remora is really noisey even after 9 months.

I did the MJ1200 mod and it is 100% more quiet but I still do not like:
1) the dark acrylic - instead of algae growth I get sponges, cannot see the bubbles, cannot use the return section for a reverse cycle refugium
2) return section difficult to work with - must move the collection cup to get into it, ie adjusting the heater.
3) cup adjustments - I like the rubber band adjustment on the CPR the remora I must fidget with everytime I move the cup
4) more difficult to clean - the CPR I break totally down. Unless some one kowns how I can clean the becket nozzle area and intake without screwing it up.

Even though the 2R has a smaller area I can still fit a heater, thermometer, several probes, and carbon bag. I have not tried a refugium for the 2R only the CPR 2.

you can get a surface skimmer for the remora line for about $30. it skims from the surface and the return goes through a sponge so you don`t get bubbles in your tank. i got it for my remora pro on my 30gal trigger tank.. NICE
