Yellow Toadstool....Help!!

Hi Everyone, I purchased a Yellow Toad Sacrophyton sp. last Sunday and it isn't looking to good. It looked great when I bought it but now it is laying on its side and is turning brown I have had leathers pout before but never like this. I hope this is just normal...Thanks for any help.

I agree Scott, that looks like more than pouting

Are you running carbon? Leathers don't seem to like carbon for some reason but it still looks like more of a problem than that.
Still have that iodine you used for the clown's wounds? Do an iodine dip on it. Use enough iodine in a small container of tank water to *just* tint the water yellow-ish. Cut away any bad parts that are obviously disintegrating and then swish it around gently for 30 seconds.

If it really looks bad, cut the good parts into frag size, dip them and see if you can save it that way. Leathers will grow a new coral from any part of the coral that's fragged.

Good luck with it, Scott.

Thanks Alice, I cut the top off, fraged the stem, did a Iodine dip, and crossing my fingers it makes it. Funny you should ask about the carbon...I never run carbon but I went after those anomones with a screwdriver and put some @)(*^% carbon on for good measure three days before I got this toad and forgot all about it.

Oh and the Clown is doing great!!!

Scott I tried looking at your tank specs but got 404 and the links from your site
Anyway yellow sarcos seem to do better under MH FWF, hope the frags make it

Alice,
Didn't know that about Carbon and Sarco's. The one I have now doesn't seem to mind Carbon at all. The one I used to have grew huge but did react violently within minutes of running a Phosphate Sponge!!! I never did that again!

Hey Doug, I have been updating my site and still haven't finished it. Lighting is 2 40w NO Actnics, 2 55w PC Actnics, 2 VHO Daylights, and 2 175w 10000K MH on a 75 gallon. The toad came out of one of Woody's tanks which was running MH too. Well I will just have to wait and see if the frags make it.

How large is your frag? We have been fragging Sarcophyton elegans (I think) with some good success. We have found that small frags under 1.5" don't survive as well. We have had great success when we make sure our frags are at least 1.5". Maybe yours was just too small to get a good chance at life.

Good luck,
Andrew

Dick;

Maybe I should rephrase that; everytime I run carbon, the leathers in my tank close up and pout. It was a personal observation. They don't react as badly as you described yours when you ran the phosphate sponge though, which is why I never did give one a try. I have several leathers in the tank and one of the Sarcophyton sp. pouts if I look at it cross-eyed!
