yellow tang behavior...

hey everyone...

i have a 5-6" yellow tang that has been in my tank for several months now and he's doing great (knock on wood). anyway, from time to time, he comes out to the sandy area right in front of his "house", extends his dorsal and anal fins, and proceeds to watch the sand "blow" in his tail wash. i was wondering if anyone knows what this kind of behavior means? is it defensive or aggressive posturing, you know, like "i'm bigger than you so you'd better watch out," or is it something else. i kind of doubt that it's aggressive behavior because he never attacks any of his tankmate before or after the display, and usually i have to peek around a corner just to catch a glimpse of him showing how big and bad he is just wondering if anyone else has any idea....

Hi reefguy!

This type of behavior is common in Yellow Tangs, mine does it too. It is a way for the fish to stir up food particles that have sttled on the bottom. It is neither aggressive, nor defensive behavior. HTH

Hi reefguy!! I do not have a yellow tang but I have a pair of maroon clownfish and the large female loves to stir of the DSB to look for food particles or little critters. Quite normal behavior as Drew has stated! Johnny

Reefguy,

I don't have a yellow tang, but I do have a hippo tang. I have found him to be one of the playful fish I have ever had. I can assume that your yellow is acting just as playful.

Speaking of best buddies...my tomato clown and scooter blennie have really taken to each other. They sleep side by side every night--the scooter buries itself in the sand and the tomato sleeps as close as physically possible!

The tomato just follows the blennie around the tank...it sorta looks like the blennie is "walking" the clown...

Everyone have a great weekend!
