Yellow leather frag?
I fraged it a few months ago, and it's growing ok, (the frag) but it's brownish not bright yellow. What's up?

is the mother colony yellow? if all of them are turning yellow, then you may have to much nutrients in the water. this is feeding the zooxanthellae, which are brown. we are discussing this in The Think Tank right now. as it turns out zooxanthellae are not what gives us the pretty colours. it is the other symbionts that are hosted in the corals that give the corals the colours. generally speaking if a coral is turning brown than that means the zooxanthellae are in a higher population than the colouring symbiont.

I wish it were as simple as that. There are bound to be other forces at play here, as here is a yellow leather frag in a tank with no nutrients as of yet:
And here is a leather I grew from another frag and the tank is suffering from high nutrients due to my attempting to keep a tubastrea alive by feeding it in the tank (I think I better start taking it to Denny's)

Is it getting enough light? In the wild they are real shallow water critters, I've seen them high and dry at low tide, in the midday tropical sun. That's bound to be a lot of light!

Well, frankly I can't exactly remember, but maybe it's just a "frag thing", due to it needing extra nutrition/energy for regrowing, maybe it has extra zooxan during this early start that it won't need later?

I dont think anyone know's how to make them color up yellow as of yet,in fact most of the ones I have seen real yellow were in tanks full of Nitrates and gunk.

No nitrates, I ran out of gunk test kit, (on BO) and the mother is bright yellow.

I get the impression from his statement that it is.
The brown frag I have is new, fragged a few weeks ago. I can't remember if the yellow one was brown when it first started. It was definitely yellow before the nutrients increased, and hasn't changed to a darker color since started feeding the tubastrea. It's a mystery to me, unless it's "feelings are hurt" from being fragged?
