Xenia climbing the filter box?
Hi Hobbyists,
I have a very happy red sea xenia population. I'd like to remove them from the pre-filter box they have attached themselves onto. They are slowly moving up near the overflow. Can I scrape them off w/ a blade or credit card w/out injury. I'm planning to give them to a friend. Thank you for your time.

I don't see a problem with that...just go slow and easy. Do you have a pic? I would love to see what this red xenia looks like.

I would think that using a razor blade would work better than a credit card. And actually, if you don't get it all, it may re-sprout there. Since xenia takes only a few hours to re-attach to whatever you mount it to, just loop some netting around the base and attach away! (Does your friend know what you're getting him into!? )
Actually, xenia can be a nice cash-crop if you can find an LFS to buy it from you.

Danielle

When my xenia aren't crashing they are taking over like yours! I would just scrape them off carefully with a blade, and try to get all of it off, because I have seen them grow back from a small lump of flesh before! Better yet, you could just cut them off near the base with some scissors or whatever, and let that attach to a rock, give it to your friend, then scrape whatever is left off your pre-filter box.

I think this is a better idea than just cutting them off the box

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I needed some reassurrance. I love all the life in my tank, and would feel horrible if I harmed any of them. I will post pics as soon as I have a digital camera. It will be soon since my wife's expecting.
I've seen so many nice photos on this site. I'm amazed at the setups people have designed. I will be referring to many of them for ideas when I build my next tank.
