Xenia

Hi everyone. I have a small problem for you. I have a piece of rock with pulsating Xenia which has stopped pulsating.

I've had it for a couple of months and it was doing fine (although sections of it would shut down for short periods each day - something a friend of mine says should not happen judging from his experience with the coral).

I'm thinking it could be two things:

Salinity level - I just had a slight salinity increase do to poor water changing techniques.

Over dose of reef solution - I use this additive and am afraid that the iodine levels got to high causing the Xenia to pucker out.

Anyway, I respectfully submit this to the esteemed board for your review.

Could it be due to these two conditions, or is it normal for Xenia to shut down from time to time (it has now been about 3 days since it pulsed)

Every else in the tank looks great.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to post my tank specifications shortly to help in your analysis.

Hi Peter,

I read in your other post that your alk and Ca are excellent. One other thing is pH. Many people have found a correlation between a high pH and happy Xenia.

It is possible your salinity swing and or possible additive overdose effected it but you'd think you'd have other corals showing signs of distress.

I stopped dosing iodine about a year ago and my Xenia has never looked better. Iodine is tough to test for and I didn't like chancing it. According to the experts we get enough iodine from the food we add and water changes.

Troy

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply.

PH is solid at 8.3

I think I'm going to cut back on the reef solution for awhile and see what happens.
