WOW 136 live babies and counting!!!
Hi all!
Big Daddy has outdone himself this time! I can still see one or two in the overflow, but I've taken out 136 live ones and 2 dead ones (that look like something took a bite out of them) so far.
Big Daddy is my male seahorse (Hippocampus reidi).
His previous record was 137 babies, so we're up 1 so far, and like I said I haven't quite collected them all yet.
I've had dismal failures with trying to rear them in the past, but this time I'm trying a totally different setup using Kriesel-style circulation in one and two gallon goldfish bowls. There's nothing mechanical inside the bowl to suck them up, trap them or chew them up. All that's inside is an airline siliconed in place, to keep everybody MOVING and away from the surface.
Cross your fingers folks, it looks good so far, but the true test will be in the next couple of weeks.
I think I need to buy some more bowls....
Jenn

Thanks
140 live and 4 not, and I think I've got them all. Will check the overflow again in a bit, I'm kinda half glued to the TV right now
I hate when bad things happen.

That's great, Jenn!
Tell me: how do you exactly count all those moving little critters? You can't just count their legs and divide by 4 like you can with cows.

Counting them is easy
You see, my overflow conveniently collects them all, where they wait for me until the morning. Then I get my handy dandy Python Mini out and siphon them out into a 1 gallon pail. Then I move them using the reefer's secret weapon: TURKEY BASTER from the pail to their nursery, and I count them as I hoover them up.
The first siphon load got me 100. The second load got me 20 and the rest came out in fits and spurts. I've checked and double checked and I think I've got them all out.
I usually turn off the powerhead in the main tank but last night I forgot and was afraid that I'd have killed a bunch, but apparently not This is his biggest brood yet.

That is very cool Jenn! Keep up the good work! The seahorse exhibit I saw at the Shedd really inspired me, they are very neat creatures indeed.

All still alive this morning (yippeeee).
Just moved them from the 1 gallon bowl to 2-2 gallon bowls. Just added fresh brine to saidbowls and adjusting the curent so they can strike at the brine.
Gawd I need an RO unit...I'm out of water again, and I have a maintenance to do on Thursday, as well as daily changes in these bowls.
I tested the water in my pipefish quarantine bucket I'm surprised they haven't all dropped dead....but they are eating and otherwise fine (knock on wood.)
Guess I have to shclep to the LFS for some water this aft, if they have any. Yesterday they didn't

Sounds like we need to have another contest.
Glad to hear they are doing well.
