woo hoo I'm a reefer now!
I have had my 29 gallon set up for about 6 weeks now with some non live rock nad about 2" of crushed coral and 2 damsels. It was cycling very slowly and I decided that I wanted to get a DSB. So I asked here where to get some southdown, and Matt (BROWN TROUT) offered to give me as much live sand as I wanted since he was tearing down his 180 and moving down to San Diego. I stopped by there yesterday and filled up 2 5 gallon buckets of his sand and he even threw in about 15 pounds of live rock! I could hardly believe his generousity. He was even offering to hook me up with some nice coral frags, but I declined since my tank is not suitable yet. It was nice to meet such a genuinly friendly and helpful person. It was unfortunate that the only reason I met him was because he was moving away.
So anyway laying in the sand bed there were a few frags of zooanthids that he gave me just to see what happens with. The live rock had some tiny little Xenia growing on them and even a small mushroom. All of these pieces have now opened up and look great. The best part of the whole thing is my water quality has turned around over night! Everyting has dropped down to almost 0 after only having the LS and LR in for about 8 hours. I am going to test again when I get home from work tonight and see where it's at. I am hoping that my tiny little corals make it since the water was in pretty bad shape when they went in there.
I guess i will post a pic too when I get home

Cool on the sand and rock. Nice people are hard to find sometimes. You never know with the frags, coral can be pretty tough. Good luck!

Hey all,
thanks for the kind words, and I have loved this hobby way before I started it! I have been wanting to set up a reef for about 2 years now. I will post some pics this evening.

Thats great about your lr and ls, instant nitrogen cycle processing. Go slowly though. Glad to have another on board

Hey Jimbo, thanks for the advice!
I am not in a big hurry to do too much, and have a pretty small reef budget anyway at this point in time. I am going to do my best to be a responsible reef keeper!

Maybe too little too late !
I thought that I should relay my story re:substrate from an established tank. I recently changed my tank over from a 75 to a larger tank. Anyway I was going to add the substrate to the new tank as it was just a year old and clean with a wealth of critters living in it. I was told by everyone that I spoke to, to not add the stuff from the old tank. Their theory is that everything will be disturbed and maybe even toxic to the new setup. Man I was tempted... but too afraid to make the fatal mistake I bought all new substrate, except for about 20 lbs of sand from the old tank. I figured even if it did mess things up, I have over 200 gals of water and my system should be able to handle that. Just my experience, hope it helps.

Well, I hope your wrong about that one!
I suppose that even if I do have a toxic spike and the fish/ frags die, I will still be miles ahead of where I was before, since I now have a DSB and some LR.
Hopefully all will work out and make it thru this!
