wimpy P store stand
I bought a 75g stand on clearance from Petco and supported it with 2x2's. This was sort of a biff though because I thought the tank would fit inside the recess and not on top of the 1 x 4 or whatever it is trim top pieces.
Is a stand like this going to be sturdy enough, or should I reinforce with 2 x 2's all the way up around the bottom of the stand.
Does just the frame of the tank need to contact the top lip of the stand, so I would recess the wood supports just below flush?

If it is a glass tank, then only the frame needs to be in contact with the top lip of the stand.

Perry, I cannot believe you didn't build your stand from scratch...

You can always put a pc of plywood on top, if the lip doesn't reach the tank frame .
Sounds like the old saying . "When in Doubt DON'T "

If built right, 2x2s are plenty strong. Check the load paths, if the wood is in compression it should be good. If the hardware (screws, or even glue) is taking the loads, I'd be much less comfortable.

I made sure not to tweak the stand with hardware under stress.
Tom, I was going to build my stand but for 70 bucks the P store one was just fine. All I had to do was reinforce it and it needs paint to match the kitchen cabinets.
