Unhappy

Why's my Foxface unhappy?

My 240 fowlr has been up since January and my one spot foxface rabbitfish was my first fish. He was bright yellow in the beginning and happily grazed on algae throughout the rockwork. Later I added a royal gramma basslet. The basslet postures somewhat towards the foxface but nothing serious; the foxface is three times his size. Now my foxface is pale all the time; poor color, almost dark in color at times. His eating habit consists of dashing out from hiding, eating quickly and then hiding again. I was told he needed more fish in the tank so I got a small niger trigger (he's real mellow) to help. The rabbit seemed to perk up for a little while but now he's back to the same thing again. Any ideas?

He's eating aqualine veggie tabs and seaweed salad in the veggie clip.

It certainly sounds like he is spooked - Does the gramma still bully it?

I agree with Kelli, when a foxface turns dark it usually means they are frightened. Someone in that tank is bullying that fish, I would guess. You can either get rid of the offending bully or put in another fish or two to cause confusion "Confuse A Fish".

Good luck!

Ditto...gramma's are bullies (I'll bet it is still nipping it when it comes out).

I just added a powder brown tang to my 155 and he started to bully our foxface. This caused the same problem you are having. Fortunately our yellow tang has decided to play sheriff and protects the ff. Now after a week the ff is more apt to come out of hidding and graze along with his tank mates.

My chromi constantly picks on my foxface... he doesn't realize he's like a third of the size of the foxface! He's the biggest bully in my tank! He is a damsel afterall....
