Why is my clam dying
hey all. I have this large beutiful clam (bright blue and purple) that all of a sudden has its mantle all shrivelled up and it looks like pulling away from the shell. it was thriving and then yesterday it was closed and today it is half way open and shrivelled. it is in a 50 gallon with 1 250 watt MH XM 20k mogul bulb over it with a lumenarc 4 reflector. all my corals and sps are fine as well as my other clam. temp 78, salinity 1.025 I will check everything else when I get home.
What is going on? Can I save it? It looks really bad.

I just bought a clam a few weeks ago and I know very little about them. I was having a problem with one of my fish trying to eat the clam. Through the process I learned of a snail (pyramid snail) that eats clams. My understanding is it eats through the shell and drains them. Check for theses snails and see if you have any. I had one and had to pull it off. Not sure if that helps.
Good Luck!

Close, it is a nocternal snail that is very small and will only really be seen at night. Druing the day they hide under the clam, or in it's scoots if your clam has that. They also lay their eggs in the scoots, or by the clam's foot. At night these snails come out walk up the shell and poke into the clam's mantle, to drain the juces from it. This will eventually cause death, these snails will also attack astrena snailes when all the clams are gone.

Can you get a pic of what the clam looks like?
How long have you had the clam?
Would you say it is in a high light area of your tank?
This kinda sounds like pinched mantle.

I can try to get a pic when I get home tonight. It seems to be deteriorating very quickly. I have notices a lot of tiny snails in my tank lately. I thought they looked like turbos. I just figured the had babies, but I could be wrong, but they are everywhere. I have had the clam for about 6 months and moved it to my 50 when i got rid of the 150 it was in. my whole tank is lit really well, and it was doing fine right where it is, but then all of a sudden yesterday it was all shrivelled.

If the snailes are out during the day, and all over the tank rather than all over the clam then they probably are harmless. The Prymid snails perty much stick to their food source (the clam).
I think the pictures will give us a better idea of what is going on here, or at least I hope they will.

Is it possible that while moving him his foot pad was damaged? I tried to look online for cuases of sudden death in clams and this is what I found:
The byssus gland should be undamaged. You should not see any torn or loose tissue hanging from the bottom of the clam. Some byssal strands may be visible, but no solid tissue hanging loose. Byssal gland damage isn't always visible, so be warned. The clam may appear fine for a couple of weeks and then die suddenly for seemingly no reason.
Since all of your other corals seem fine I think it's something with the clam only and not your water.

Jasontkd- if they are pyramid snails than they will only be located where the clam is. pyramid snails will not roam around, they like to stay next to their food source.
