why goniopora???
ok so i was at my lfs the other day and i saw these really nice pieces of coral for only $30!!! i asked the employee about them and he said the reason it is so cheap is that its goniopora polyformis and Goniopora norfolkensis, they are almost garaunteed to die within 6-12 months, regardless of how good your system is. is this really true and if so why? thanks

pretty much.
there have been people able to get it to grow or live longer but not a lot longer. i have heard some say close to a year. they need a lot of care and the super duper perfect system for them., yes they are a beautiful coral, but over all i would pass on them

we just do not know exactly what they need to survive in our systems. they come from lagoonal areas, so high DOC water is a must. i have a feeling our tanks are not nearly dirty enough for them.

Would running a Natural sea water system with weekly changes do the trick? Not that I am going to do this but it would seemthat there is something about perfect water perams that NSW has that they need.

As stated by Geoff in his post our systems might not be dirty enough for them........So i would think doing weekly WC'c with NSW would make the water to clean. So if you have a really nigh nitrate system this coral might do well i guess.

This is the craziest thing I have ever heard but I need to tell everyone because the question came up. my FLS told me that in order to keep these alive longer, you have to .....this didnt come from me so......
he collects fish poop and squirts it on the coral. he said they live alot longer if you do this. who knows though!

I'm proud then because mine is pretty healthy and I found it very hardly too. Mine is green-yellow and I have been keeping him for a year now, let see what happens.

do you have a Goniopora or an Alveopora, they are very similar. the Alveopora has 12 tentacles per polyp, while the Goniopora have 24 per polyp. Alveopora are easier to keep.
keeping them up to a year is not unheard of. keeping them for many years is.
