Why Do Fish Jump?

Now what turns one fish to another and say: Hey I am going carpet surfing today!!!! I know that is not funny but what are the reasons for fish to leave their natural home and jump to their death(unless we catch them soon enough).
Has there been any studies done on this? I am sure there are alot of logical reasons for this happening but would like to know from you guys what your thoughts are and have you found any good reading that explains this problem of fish jumping!
I know we have had a royal grammas jump out of my wife's tank and into her tennis shoe and she grabbed it and put it back into the tank and it was fine. I had a Orchid Dottyback jump out of the water and land on the glass cover under MH lighting which was not good!
So let's hear your reasons for fish jumping and stories if you have them! Johnny

I've Read somewhere that Fish stress can cause them do do erratic behaviour, including jumping. Things like Lack of O2 and whatnot.

I don't have much of a better explanation then that.

Far as fish acting strange. all the fish in my Fresh Tank started eating nothing near my filters last night..

Watching a movie, and all of a sudden I hear the Clicking noises they make when eating food of the surface... problem is.. I fed them a good 3 hours earlier..

Who knows.... Maybe they know something we dont.

I always just thought it was the net I was chasing them with.

I try and cover the open areas around the tank using the plastic mosquito screen found at HD. This seem to keep my firefish in the tank for several years, he was very skitish. It would seem he would leap out of the tank because someone approached to quickly.

Some fish just spook easier than others. Some fish get chased out by aggressive tankmates. Others jump due to stress or illness. Don't forget the ocean is XXX times deeper than our little tanks and not all fish know that.

I thought the fish wanted to come out and play

... what do you mean the ocean is bigger than my 10 gallon.... back to the LFS to explain this one to him

Sorry couldn't resists

But I think like the above statement, due to stress of competition, territorial, space confinement....

Owner looking at fish with steak knife.... ****, stop it... couldn't resists again.

Johnny all I can say is that if I were a fish and was stuck in a glass box..........and you stuck your face up to the glass I would jump to
