Annoying? Are they abrasive to the fish and corals? Or just ugly?

Ugly.

Some people will argue that they do have a negitive effect on certian coral,.. and they may be right but I don't buy it,.. the coral I keep sit in air for a few hours every day,.. I think they can take the bubbles.

However,.. if you keep seahorses they really are bad news.

Mine don't,.. but in the wild they do,.. SPS are often exposed to air in the wild from low tide.

Plus the surf has to make bubbles in the ocean.

The only thing I could possibly see them hurting are possibly sponges or gorgoian (spl?), the things you are specifically warned to never allow to come in contact with air.

They will pose a problem to capricornis and other plating corals. The bubbles will collect underneath and cause (sometimes big) problems.

This is true if you don't have enough flow to clear any bubbles out from under the plates of corals like this.

I still think the uglyness is enough of a motive to get rid of them though.

I agree. My main concern is that they are ugly and tend to ruin pictures.

many gorgonians this isnt true for, and the only sponges that die becasue they are exposed to air are the ones you buy. scientific fact there.

I have seen a case where the bubbles possibly got into a fish's bloodstream and ended up inside the fish's eye. (I assume that's how the air got into the eye, as the bubbles were really bad- can't think of another cause) This was after I got back from vacation one time and the pumps @ work were sucking air - and evidently had been for some time, you couldn't see through the water.
I hope that you don't do this in your tanks, so it shouldn't be a problem. It does however bring up the possiblily that these bubbles in small amounts could be stressful to the fish.
