Who's got pictures of tanks with black sand?
Well? I think it's a really cool idea, especially aside some real nicely colored fish and zoos. It'll make everything pop. Let's see em

I just got some Indo-Pacific Black - it's a mixture of black and white. I am planning on getting a tridacna clam and a lion so I am hoping the black and white really brings out there colors. I don't want to put the sand in until the rock is cured, but I will post pics asap.

At work we have 2 tanks with black sand and it always looks dirty, I wander if you find that to be true also and have to clean it more often.

My tanks have black and white sand which looks nice but doesn't meet the requirements of your request (its slightly more white than black). Pure black will probably require lots of cleaning depending on what is in your tank but mixed I think it looks really nice.

my sand had some algae growth before, buts its calmed down now, the sand doesnt look very dirty often, but since its hard to clean the glass down there (any tips?) it gives the appearance of dirt easier. but my cleanup crew does pretty good, plus im about to up the flow to help out some more.

I just mixed 50% Indo-Pacific Black with 50% Tahitian Moon Black and it looks great! The Indo Pacific was a little too white for me tastes. Now I think its perfect, plus it still has some buffering capabilities. Unfortuneately the water is still pretty cloudy. I will get some pictures as soon as the water clears up.

Doesn't the Tahitian Moon Black offer the same filtration services as any other sand?

filtration yes, once the tank is cycled its like any regular sand, the problem is, it doesnt buffer the water to the proper ph as many of the substrates available do.

Just to add a little to andys reply...The indo pacific is made from arrogonite (calcerous based) so if your pH drops real low, the sand will actually dissolve and stabilize it back up. The Tahitian moon is not arrogonite based, and thus does not provide this benefit. However, with proper pH maintenance, this shouldn't ever be an issue.

yes! thank you power man, thats what i meant, but sometimes i dont think so good, dumb...
but also! your live rock should help buffer the ph, and if you have a sump, its not a bad idea to put some sand or crushed coral in there that will also help!

I'll try and dig out the links. But, from what I've read the ph buffering abilities of Aragonite side is Not completely accurate. While it will disolve and raise the ph. The waters ph would need to be very low(in the 6 range) to actually see any results at which point your livestock would probably be dead. Maybe one of the chemistry lovers could shed a little light. I'm going to start a new thread on this subject since we're getting offtopic.
