It doesn't have to be very dense or piled in any special way. Rubble piles with rubble that is golf-ball sized or smaller won't allow any type of fish in. The piles aren't that large - probably 10-12 pieces of rubble in 3 locations in the tank. At night, the pods are swarming around them...but mandarin is sleeping.
